On May 19-21, the Third Astafiev Readings were held in The topic of the Third Readings was Contemporary World and Peasant
Many different writers, literary critics, historians, museum and library workers, archivists, close friends and relatives of Viktor Astafiev, as well as his admirers took an active part in the Readings.
The plenary session of the Readings was focused on the problem paper of O. Pavlov Russian Literature and Peasantry. The discussion on this subject was kept up by critics L. Anninskiy and V. Kourbatov, writers M. Kourayev and L. Bykov, literary critics A. Bolshakova and K. Kokshenova, and historian Theodor Shanin.
The topics of sectional sessions were the following: Poetic Style of V. Astafiev and Contemporary Literary Tendencies, "The Russian System” and Traditions of Peasant Russia, Peasant Russia in Books, Russia’s Peasantry of the 20th Century in Museum and Archival Works.
Several new publications were presented during the readings. L. Anninskiy presented the books My Century, My Beast and Land and Stick - publication of the correspondence between V. Astafiev and A. Makarov. A. Sorokin, the Director General of the publishing house “ROSSPEN” (Russian Political Encyclopedia), and S. Mironenko, the Director of the RF State Archives, presented seven out of 10 volumes of GULAG Encyclopedia. And A. Bolshakova presented a book Russian Peasantry of the 18-20th Century.
